Our curriculum
At Cwm Primary we've shaped our own curriculum around the Curriculum for Wales, built on real experiences, our village and valley, and the interests of our children.
Four purposes, every child
The Curriculum for Wales asks every school to grow four things in every learner. They shape everything we plan:
Ambitious, capable learners
…ready to learn throughout their lives.
Enterprising, creative contributors
…ready to play a full part in life and work.
Ethical, informed citizens
…of Wales and the world.
Healthy, confident individuals
…ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
The six areas of learning and experience
Learning is planned across six areas, with literacy, numeracy and digital skills applied in every one. Here's what each looks like at Cwm Primary.
-
Language, Literacy & Communication
English, Welsh and the joy of words: spoken, read and written.
-
Mathematics & Numeracy
Number sense, problem-solving and maths you can use.
-
Science & Technology
Curiosity about how the world works, plus digital skills.
-
Humanities
History, geography, RVE: our place in the world, starting with Cwm.
-
Health & Well-being
Healthy bodies, healthy minds, good friendships.
-
Expressive Arts
Art, music, drama and dance, and every child gets to shine.
How we teach
Great teaching at Cwm Primary is warm, well-planned and ambitious. We know every child, we plan for every child, and we expect every child to surprise themselves.
Lessons are planned around clear learning intentions, with regular opportunities for talk, hands-on practice and feedback. Teachers use ongoing assessment to spot who needs a challenge and who needs extra support, and adapt day to day rather than waiting for a test to tell them.
Outdoor learning, trips and visitors from the community are woven through the curriculum wherever possible, alongside a strong focus on reading for pleasure.
